Full title: Saren Fights A Bear For The Fair Asari Maiden's Love Also There Is An Explosion

before you call me sexist for putting the only female in a subordinate, passive position in this pastiche, let me inform you that every character in this picture is female
so now who's sexist, me or you?

yeah I don't know the fuck what's going on with that cape either

The only way this picture could be more hilariously great would be if Saren's other hand was choke holding a great white shark.

Nice! And don't worry. If someone says you're sexist, they're the ones with issues, not you.
Kundagi Featured By Owner Jul 12, 2011
I don't mean to start shit or anything, but that's absolutely untrue.
Scythexv8 Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2011
I respect your opinion but I disagree. Sexism is a form of racism and as such, a mentally induced state that reflects the persons own insecurities. Also, to be racist you must display hate against the target group; I don't see this here, nor do I see you stating that this attitude is the appropriate one for women(I obviously mean the Asari). You're not forcing your position on anyone, so how can anyone perceive this as sexist? It's just a pretty piece of art my friend, not a statement.

I really fail to understand the need to erase the concept of "damsel in distress" on the basis of sexism. Some guys like distressed, demure damsels(like me); some ladies enjoy being distressed, demure damsels. That doesn't mean I think women are inferior or that such women think they are inferior.

Instead of trying to erase or censor what they think to be bad role models(which is a form of racism naturally), people should simply teach their children to have strong willpower, face their own problems, keep an open mind and never impose their positions on others or allow others to impose their positions on them.

As for the image itself, I believe the Asari is simply deferring to the expert on this one. Not all Asari are commandos after all...
Kundagi Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2011
Haha, listen to me. "I don't want to start shit" *immediately starts shit*. Well, I fired the first shot so I guess I've no one to blame. Here goes.

I was just saying it's inappropriate and kind of a dick move to deny anyone's opinion that something is t sexist even if you cannot see it yourself, not that this particular image is sexist or not. I know it's just a stupid, fun action movie style picture made with no ill intent. Hell, I'm the one who made it. But I also know that if the people in it were human, I'd be rolling my eyes at the stereotypical gender roles of the tableaux.
What I was objecting to about your comment was the implication that if someone does find more fault in it than I, then they're wrong in doing so. If someone's offended by something, chances are it isn't just "their problem". That's a form of victim blaming, no matter how gentle or benign seeming. I can't just dismiss any claim made in earnest because I don't see it myself. If i did that, I'd never learn and would keep on going on, mindless of the mistakes I make. That's called being willfully ignorant, and I'm kind of in a field where ignorance is one of the cardinal sins.
The casual format of the piece isn't an excuse, either. Even if an image is a dumb joke or a silly piece of fanart, it can be just as revealing of ingrained attitudes as a full sized masterpiece with two hundred page manifesto attached. Hell, sometimes even more since the artist's main concern isn't raising a smoke screen or defending themselves from attackers. If you play video games (i'm going to assume you do since you know what an Asari is) chances are you've heard of the new Duke Nukeum and it's own treasure trove of outdated, sexist bullshitery. The DN game developers are not 'forcing opinions' on anyone with their shit, but it's still offensive as hell and revealing of their own backwards sexual insecurities. Some people probably don't care about that shit (they're called the "target audience" and/or "manbabies") but some people do. Some people care very much. And just because it's a video game aimed at an entirely different audience doesn't mean their objections are invalid.

This has nothing to do with the image, but since you brought it into the discussion it's fair game for rebuttal. As a woman, let me just say that nobody fucking enjoys being threatened. Nobody enjoys being the damsel. Maybe in some play situations--like, I don't know, BDSM--pretending is fine, but those are controlled. Consensual. Being actively menaced and depowered based on one's status as a 'damsel'? Oh sure, that's great fun! I love being reminded that I'm supposed to be physically weaker and at the mercy than most any guy on the street just because I had the fortune of being born female.
There was a survey done among men and women that asked each dude/dudette which side of a street s/he would prefer to cross, one with an unfamiliar dog on it or one with a stranger on it. The men chose the side with the stranger on it, the women the side with the dog. You know what? I'd chose the dog side too. Because a possibly vicious dog is still preferable to a possibly vicious human. Dogs can tear and kill and maim, humans can do the same but they can also demean, rape, kidnap, steal and do all sorts of other fun, inventive things. And I can probably deter a dog from attacking with my rainbow and sunshine-like demeanor (okay, that's false but I like dogs), but it's a less sure thing that I can do the same against an enraged human. I was taught from the start that every possible male stranger was a threat because they're bigger, whether that's true or not. I was also taught that since I'm at a natural disadvantage of being a woman, I won't always be able to fight back.
You know what? That's bullshit. Every stranger isn't a deranged killer or rapist, and I'm actually a decently strong person. I know how to fight and I know how to use my body. I've broken people's bones in fights before, men and women, and I've in turn had bones broken--true, I've always felt horrible afterwards in both situations but I know if things come down to it I can put up a good resistance and cause as much damage as I take. Still, I've been taught in the name of pragmatism and self-preservation that that doesn't matter, that I'll always be one misstep away from being a damsel. That men have sexual power over me as well as physical. And you know how it feels? Shitty. Shitty as hell.
Not that I'm saying you're a horrible person or anything, but it might be beneficial to reexamine your attitudes for a bit. Why do you think women want to be saved? Why do you enjoy the thought of it? Do you think that guys enjoy being whatever the man version of damsel is? If not, why should women?

One last nitpick!
Censorship =/= racism, which isn't the same thing as sexism, btw. I don't understand how you came to that conclusion but it's bizarre as fuck. You're using the word "racism", which is a very loaded and storied word, when you mean "discrimination", which is also loaded by less specific and pointed.
Scythexv8 Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2011
I would honestly like to apologize for starting shit; it wasn't really my intent. I seem to have missed a small point on the definition on sexism, it being "application of gender stereotypes", which would seem to invalidate a number of points in my earlier comment; no excuse there. However I never said you should automatically reject constructive criticism, which, as you said, is the best way to learn how your work affects others. But there is a difference between a constructive comment and a hateful remark and I meant the second when I said you should ignore such comments. For the damsel part, I was indeed referring to a consensual situation, granted quite a bit off the mark in this case. I know very well no one wants to be a victim and I don't either; neither do I like to victimize other people no matter the gender.
I completely concede the last point on censorship and racism, discrimination is the right word.
Again, sorry for turning this on a completely different subject and causing you distress. It is a good piece of art and the explosion at the back enhances the epic feel.

Hey man, little disagreements like this are no prob so long as we remain amiable in the end. I probably came across as too defensive but it's a sore spot for me that I deal with often, so I tend to lose my sense of scale (and sense of grammar. Just lookit all them typos and errors!) and automatically assume the worst. You're being very mature in this, more so than I. Thank you.
